Today, on what would have been his 95th birthday, we honor Chuck Berry and celebrate his legacy with the release of a very special limited run of the Chuck Berry 1970s ES-355, hand-crafted by expert luthiers and craftspeople at the Gibson Custom Shop and the Murphy Lab. In this video, we pay homage to the roots of and enduring musical legacy of Charles Edward Anderson Berry and his lasting impact on guitar players everywhere. The city of St. Louis and Chuck Berry’s music are inextricably linked. From humble beginnings in “The Ville” neighborhood he grew up in to pioneering rock and roll songs that took him around the world, and then back again to the storied Duck Room at Blueberry Hill where Chuck Berry continued to play monthly shows well into his 80s. Chuck Berry’s songs resonated deeply with America’s youth. His songs paint a picture. They tell a story. He was an artist who went far beyond genres, eras, and race. But as extraordinary as Chuck’s songwriting and performance craft were, at the end of the day, it was that guitar phrasing that set his music apart: the boogie-woogie roll, those double stops, and those multi-string bends coursing through his pickups that willed rock and roll into existence. Every rock guitar player of any stature has borrowed much from Chuck Berry. And along for that ride was his Gibson ES-355. This is more than vintage. This is lineage.
