How to Fix a Strap Button and Install Strap Locks on Your Electric Guitar

In this episode of “Gibson’s Guide to Guitar Setup and Maintenance,” players, tinkerers and guitar geeks get a crash course on guitar strap pin replacement. Gibson Master Luthier, Jim DeCola, shares some closely guarded guitar tech tips for replacing strap pins and other sage advice. A strap pin isn’t the most exciting piece of hardware on a guitar, but without a properly seated guitar strap pin, literally, all hell would break loose. Imagine Pete Townshend windmilling on stage, and suddenly, his strap pin fails. Undoubtedly chaos would ensue and some unfortunate guitar tech would probably be jettisoned from the tour bus. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to avoid any drama or damage. Jim DeCola will walk you through the safe repair and or replacement of some of the more popular types of guitar strap pins. He’ll also go over the process of tightening up the holes you screw the pins into by using, of all things, toothpicks. Some of the techniques Jim covers can also be used for tightening the holes for pickguards and control knobs. So, grab a #2 Phillips screwdriver, some wood, or Elmer’s glue, and let’s do this.
